Planning to watch Shorgul? Read the review and decide if you want to go ahead or not. Shorgul is a small budget movie that opened with a lot of expectations from the audience. Shorgul stars Jimmy Shergill, Ashutosh Rana, Hiten Tejwani, Suha Gezen and Anirudh Dave. Eijaz Khan and Sanjay Suri play pivotal roles.
The movie is set in the backdrop of a small town in UP. The communal setting of the movie makes the town appear similar to Muzzafarnagar. Muzzafarnagar has been the hot spot for communal riots. Shorgul focuses on political feuds and communal riots.
Chaudhary (Ashutosh Rana) plays a community Patriarch who is well respected by both the Hindus and the Muslims. Chaudhary’s son Raghu (Anirudh Dave) falls in love with Zainab (Suha Gezen) who is engaged to her cousin Salim (Hiten Tejwani). This miss matched love triangle leads to communal riots and bloodshed. The local political leaders use this opportunity to cash in on their own propaganda in the name of religion.Jimmy Shergill and Narendra Jha play the Hindu and Muslim politicians respectively. The entire town collapses into a war place because of this love triangle. The movie has trivialized this love story. There is no comprehensive perspective of the problem at hand. No solution has been provided. There is just killing of one character after the other.
Ashutosh and Jimmy Shergill are good in their performances. Suha Gezen is completely over the top. Hiten Tejwani too is very loud. The direction could have been much better and the screenplay needed to be crisper. There are some powerful dialogues that leave an impact but even they could not save this boat from sinking.
Shorgul is definitely not worth any of your time and money.
Rating- One and a Half Star (Half for the acting by Jimmy and Ashutosh)
