Awkward First Night in Indian Arranged Marriages

What Bollywood movies showed us over the years like, the shy bride, the confused yet over confident groom inside a decorated room leave nothing to one’s imagination! But the reality might be completely different when it comes to arranged marriages.

Everyone is aware what’s happening inside the room:

Even if you are too tired and simply want to doze off, your cousins, aunts, and uncles will never let the opportunity go—they will not only escort you to the room but crack jokes you can probably do best without. This is a super embarrassing moment when your entire clan knows what you guys are going to do.

A bed filled with roses:

You may like it or not, but there will be flowers and sometimes a few creative geniuses of the family will fill the room with embarrassing gifts. Don’t be surprised if you get a packet of condom or a tube of lubricant!

Being with a stranger:

Couples generally spend more time making elaborate plans for the wedding rather than getting to know each other better. So, when they actually spend the first night together, they realize they are with a ‘familiar’ stranger, who’s now their life partner.

Zero comfort level:

Since most of the couples do not know each other well, how can one expect them to make love with each other?

The next morning:

The morning after is worse than an awkward first night, If your aunts and uncles are still around, don’t be embarrassed if they pass discreet smiles or talk about your family planning! It might be a joke for them, but it can be very awkward for the newlyweds.
